SIBU, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Synergy between parents, teachers, students, and education authorities needs to be strengthened to curb the bullying phenomenon in schools, which is now considered a national crisis and threatens the future of the younger generation.
Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said all parties should work together to create a learning environment free from oppression and violence, including making schools an 'anti-bullying zone'.
"Bullying cases occurring today are not only increasing in numbers, but are also becoming more serious in terms of impact and form, including physical violence, sexual assault, cyberbullying, and tragic incidents leading to death," he said.
Speaking at the launch of the 'Program Bersama Menentang Buli 2025' (Together Against Bullying 2025 Programme) at Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) here today, he said firm policies, value-added educational programmes, and effective psychosocial support need to be implemented collectively to protect victims and guide perpetrators towards positive change.
The programme, jointly organised by the National Consumer Action Council (MTPN), the United Sibu Women's Empowerment Organisation (PPWBS) and UTS, was attended by students from six secondary schools and three higher education institutions in the city who participated in a poster drawing competition themed 'Bersatu Menentang Buli' (United Against Bullying).
Wong said concerns about the bullying culture are escalating as it is also becoming rampant in cyberspace due to the uncontrolled increase in social media use.
"Humiliation, social isolation, and cyberbullying may not leave physical scars, but their impact on the victim's mental health is profound and can last into adulthood," he added.
