SINTOK, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- A young woman from the Temuan Orang Asli community has expressed her determination to excel in her studies and pursue her ambition of becoming the government’s administrative and diplomatic officer (PTD) to build a better future for her family.

Algiera Nafiesa, 20, the second of six siblings, said the opportunity to pursue her studies at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) is a blessing, adding that she intends to make the most of it not only for her future but also the socio-economic landscape of the Orang Asli community.

“My focus is to earn the Dean’s List every semester and eventually graduate with excellence in the Bachelor of International Affairs Management,” she told reporters at UUM’s new student orientation here today.

Algiera, from the Orang Asli village of Sungai Mersing in Asahan, Johor, said higher education is no longer out of reach for minority communities like hers, as success can be achieved through dedication, noting that the government also offers ample support and assistance.

“I want to prove that Orang Asli children can succeed in higher education, that it’s no longer just a dream.

“In my village, only a few have pursued a diploma or degree studies. I believe my journey here will inspire others from my community to earn a degree and give back to society.

“My first choice was Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), followed by Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). I didn’t expect to be offered a place at UUM, but upon arrival, I was struck by the serene surroundings and lush greenery. I feel this environment really suits me and makes it easier to focus on my studies,” she said.

Meanwhile, UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan said this year’s intake recorded 4,549 new students across 48 undergraduate programmes.

He stated that of the total, 4,381 are local students from Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), diploma, matriculation, and UUM’s foundation in management programmes, as well as 168 international students.

He added that the university also welcomed nine pairs of twins and 11 students with disabilities.

“The enrolment of students from diverse backgrounds, including the Orang Asli community, shows UUM’s commitment to providing inclusive access to higher education,” he said.
