Nur Syaiful Finishes Fifth In World Para 100m Breastsroke In Singapore

SINGAPORE, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- National para swimmer Muhammad Nur Syaiful Zulkafli began his campaign at the 2025 World Para Swimming Championships with a fifth-place finish in the men’s 100 metre (m) breaststroke SB4 (physical impairment) event here tonight.

The 30-year-old swimmer, competing despite not being well, clocked 1 minute 43.27 seconds (s) at the OCBC Aquatic Centre on the opening day of the championships.

"Since last night I wasn’t feeling well... I have a cold, cough, and a headache. My focus was actually on tonight's event, but now I will try my best for the remaining two events by at least improving my personal best," he told Bernama.

Muhammad Nur Syaiful had earlier finished fourth overall in the heats this morning with a new personal best of 1:42.49.

The two-time bronze medallist in the men’s 50m freestyle S5 (physical impairment) at the World Para Swimming Championships in London 2019 and Madeira 2022 is scheduled to compete in two other events -- the men’s 100m and 200m freestyle S5 (physical impairment) in Singapore.

Meanwhile, 2020 and 2024 Paralympic Games gold medallist Dmitrii Cherniaev, competing under the Neutral Paralympic Athletes (NPA) banner, won gold in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB4 with a time of 1:33.39, while silver went to Colombian swimmer Moises Fuentes Garcia.

Paris 2024 silver medallist Antonios Tsapatakis of Greece took home the bronze.

The World Para Swimming Championships 2025, taking place from Sept 21 to 27, marks the first time the event is being held in Asia.
