DOHA, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim departed for home on Monday after attending the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit here.

The special aircraft carrying the Prime Minister and the Malaysian delegation took off from Hamad International Airport at 8.10 pm local time (1.10 am, Sept 16 Malaysian time).

Anwar is scheduled to land at Penang International Airport on Tuesday morning before attending the Malaysia Day 2025 celebration at the PICCA@Arena Butterworth Convention Centre in the evening.

Earlier, in delivering Malaysia’s National Statement at the extraordinary summit, Anwar urged severe punitive action against Israel while strongly condemning the regime’s latest airstrikes on Doha, the capital of Qatar, as well as the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The Prime Minister also called for safe passage for humanitarian aid carried by the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which is currently crossing the Mediterranean Sea with supplies of food, medicine and messages of peace en route to Gaza’s shores.

Anwar’s delegation included Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry.

Anwar attended the extraordinary summit at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, following the latest developments involving Israeli attacks on the country.

The extraordinary summit was also attended by key leaders of Islamic nations, including Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah II Al Hussein.

According to international media reports, the emergency summit was convened to discuss the Zionist attacks on Doha on Sept 9, allegedly targeting Hamas’ political leadership who were meeting at the time to discuss a Gaza ceasefire proposal backed by the United States.

The attack in the Leqtaifiya area involved about 15 Zionist fighter jets, killing six people including the son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, his chief of staff and a Qatari security officer, while Hamas’ top leaders reportedly survived.
