GEORGE TOWN, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- A video of a food stall in a shopping mall food court in Bayan Lepas, which went viral yesterday over claims it was using a false halal certificate, dates back to July, said Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid.
Mohamad, who is also the president of the Penang Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP), stated that the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIPP), through its Halal Management Division, conducted an inspection on July 8 after receiving the report.
“The outlet operates on Level 3 of Queensbay Mall and not the food stall located in the LOTUS supermarket at Sungai Dua.
“The inspection found that the outlet does not hold a Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) and no longer displays a copy of the SPHM from the slaughterhouse owned by Nafas Food Processing and Marketing Sdn Bhd on its premises,” he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Bernama reported that the Penang Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) inspected a food stall in a shopping mall food court in Bayan Lepas after a viral video claimed it was using a halal certificate that did not belong to the outlet.
Mohamad said the company has been warned against displaying a halal certificate belonging to another business, which is an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, adding that the inspection report was presented at the 11th meeting of the state panel on halal certification on July 15.
“After the video resurfaced, JHEAIPP immediately conducted another inspection yesterday, together with Penang KPDN, at the food outlet in Queensbay Mall as well as the outlet operating in Plaza Gurney.
“The inspection confirmed that no SPHM from another company or the slaughterhouse was displayed, and no violations of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 were found,” he said.
He advised the public to verify the accuracy of any information before sharing it, including on social media, adding that they can check halal status on the Halal Portal at myehalal.halal.gov.my.
Any complaints about the misuse of the halal logo or SPHM can be directed to JHEAIPP’s Halal Management Division by calling 04-2505451 or emailing ehalal@penang.gov.my.
