INDONESIA

1. BRICS SUMMIT IN RIO REVIVES BANDUNG SPIRIT -- THE JAKARTA POST

During his debut at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, President Prabowo Subianto called on member nations to revive the Bandung Spirit and show united leadership in the face of escalating global tensions and the United States’ tariff policy. An official statement on Monday reaffirmed Jakarta’s “full support” for BRICS’ economic cooperation vision, noting that Indonesia’s recent entry into the group aims to “strengthen” its global standing while promoting stability and shared prosperity.

 

2. TWO SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS ARRESTED OVER SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF FELLOW OFFICER -- JAKARTA GLOBE

Two police officers have been detained in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) over the death of Brigadier Muhammad Nurhadi, a member of the NTB Police’s Internal Affairs division, in a case that has drawn public attention and demands for transparency. Nurhadi was found dead in a swimming pool at a lodge in Gili Trawangan, North Lombok, on April 16. Investigators now suspect that Nurhadi was killed after allegedly flirting with a female colleague linked to one of his superiors.

 

LAOS 

1. VIENTIANE BRT TRAIL RUN BEGINS IN AUGUST -- VIENTIANE TIMES 

Vientiane authorities announced a three-month trial run of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to begin in August. Construction of bus lanes and stations is almost 70 per cent completed. Fifty-five new buses will be deployed. 

 

2. ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT GETS PRIORITY -- VIENTIANE TIMES 

The government has allocated special funds to finance environmental protection projects in six different provinces across Loa. The project would promote awareness of the harmful impacts of waste and enhance protection of the protected forest. 

 

MYANMAR 

1. OVER 9,000 SCAM CENTRE WORKERS DEPORTED -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

Myanmar, China and Thailand are discussing repatriating foreigners arrested working in the online scam industry and ways to stop their entry. In the first six months of this year, Myanmar deported over 9,000 undocumented foreigners.

 

2. SOLAR POWER TO FUEL RICE MILLS -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

The Myanmar Rice Federation signed agreements with 17 solar producers to use solar energy in rice mills designated for exports. A preliminary study was done earlier for the installation of 41.5 megawatt solar power projects at 28 rice mills by 11 solar companies.

1. 25% ON JAPAN AND MALAYSIA, 40% ON LAOS: TRUMP’S TARIFF LETTERS TO ASIA ADD PRESSURE FOR DEALS BY AUG 1 -- THE STRAITS TIMES

The politely-worded letters arrived in waves, laying out the consequences for Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and others for failing to strike a deal in time to ward off the elevated tariffs unilaterally announced by President Donald Trump in early April and then paused until July 9.

 

2. TRUMP UNVEILS FIRST WAVE OF STEEPER US TARIFFS IN PUSH FOR DEALS -- CNA/REUTERS

President Donald Trump on Monday (Jul 7) began telling trade partners - from powerhouse suppliers like Japan and South Korea to minor players - that sharply higher US tariffs will start Aug 1, marking a new phase in the trade war he launched earlier this year.

1. OPPOSITION MP ALLEGES SEVEN THAI POLITICIANS HOLD BANK ACCOUNTS IN CAMBODIA -- THE NATION

Rangsiman Rome alleges seven Thai politicians have bank accounts in Cambodia, calls for tougher government stance on border and scam issues.

 

2. THAIS REVISE TRADE OFFER WITH US -- BANGKOK POST Thailand has offered to commit to a 20-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) import deal with the United States, and plans to acquire Boeing aircraft over the coming years to avert a punitive 36% export levy threatened by the Trump administration, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.

 

VIETNAM

1. THAI BINH 2 POWER PLANT ENSURES ENERGY SECURITY -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

Thai Binh 2 Thermal Power Plant's electricity output reached an estimated 3.79 billion kWh, achieving 115 per cent of the target. The plant helped to stabilise the power supply during peak dry-season demand in northern Vietnam.

 

2. VIETNAM ATTENDS BRICS SUMMIT TO SHARE ITS VISION -- VIETNAMPLUS

Vietnam participated as a partner country in the BRICS Summit in Brazil for the first time. This multilateral cooperation mechanism offers Vietnam an opportunity to engage with the global community, promote peace, foster inclusivity and amplify the voices of developing nations.
