BEIJING, July 3 (Bernama) -- China looks forward to work with all parties to consolidate the BRICS strategic partnership, make due contributions to safeguarding multilateralism, promoting common development and improving global governance as well as advance the high-quality development of greater BRICS cooperation.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, BRICS countries offer an important platform for greater solidarity and cooperation among the Global South.

“They are important players in promoting the reform of the global governance system and have been committed to safeguarding multilateralism, defending fairness and justice, and promoting common development,” she said in a statement.

Mao noted that China attaches great importance to and will actively participate in the BRICS cooperation.

“We stand ready to work with all parties to uphold the spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation, stay committed to the original aspiration of seeking strength through solidarity and achieving common development, support Brazil, the BRICS chair, in making the summit a full success, and advance the high-quality development of greater BRICS cooperation,” she said.

She further said that the BRICS cooperation mechanism offers the most important platform for the solidarity and cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries in the world.

“It’s an important force for realising an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation,” she added.

The BRICS summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7 and Brazil is the president of BRICS this year.

China’s foreign ministry has also announced that Premier Li Qiang will attend the 17th BRICS Summit.

BRICS is an interstate association created in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, a bloc that collectively accounts for one-fifth of global trade.

South Africa joined in 2011. Since the beginning of 2024, a number of other countries have joined BRICS.

Malaysia has been recognised as one of 13 nations officially added to BRICs as a partner country in October last year.

Besides Malaysia, the other 12 nations were Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
