ST. PETERSBURG, June 20 (Bernama-TASS) -- Russian state news agency TASS has been unanimously elected as chair of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) until 2028.
The decision was made during the plenary meeting of the 19th OANA General Assembly held in St. Petersburg, TASS news agency reported.
TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov was also elected president of OANA for the duration of the chairmanship, while TASS First Deputy Director General Mikhail Gusman will serve as the organisation’s secretary-general.
The CEOs of China’s Xinhua (Fu Hua), Iran’s IRNA (Hossein Jaberi-Ansari), South Korea’s Yonhap (Hwang Dae-il), Turkey’s Anadolu (Serdar Karagoz) and Azerbaijan’s Azertac (Vugar Aliyev) were elected as OANA vice presidents.
The next OANA General Assembly will be hosted by Azertac in Azerbaijan in 2028.
OANA, the world’s largest regional media organisation, aims to facilitate direct and unrestricted exchange of news among news agencies in the Asia-Pacific region, which is home to more than half of the world’s population.
Currently, OANA comprises 41 news agencies from 33 countries, including members from the Middle East and several Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries.
TASS has been a member of OANA since 1981 and previously chaired the organisation in 2000 and 2013, when it also hosted the General Assembly meetings.
