Dosm, Unitar To Collaborate In Data Analysis, Research And New Findings

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and UNITAR International University (UNITAR) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate in data analysis, research sharing and new findings.

The DOSM said in a statement that the MoU was signed by its Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin and UNITAR vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, and witnessed by senior officers of both parties.

According to the statement, Mohd Uzir said the MoU was also to carry out cooperation related to research and knowledge sharing in the field of statistics, supply, storage and exchange of information and improvement of the quality of official information as subject to the law that will be mutually agreed upon.

"Several initiatives were implemented in the context of the DOSM’s modernisation such as the development of the OpenDOSM NextGen portal, MyLocal Stats and Kawasanku mobile applications and statistics,” he said.

"These initiatives show population statistics as well as demographic and socioeconomic indicators at a granular level that can be at the centre of more particular and specific planning according to focus areas at the Parliament and State Legislative Assembly levels as a reference and comparative analysis. With this information, it can facilitate cooperation in joint research in the future," he said.

This partnership is expected to support the development of field experts on both sides to meet current and future data needs by adopting the latest statistical techniques, the application of data science and analytics and other innovative approaches.

The MoU between DOSM and UNITAR is the 24th signed by DOSM with institutions of higher learning.

DOSM launched OpenDOSM NextGen, an open source data sharing platform as a medium to provide data catalogues and visualisations to facilitate users to analyse various data that can be accessed through the https://open.dosm.gov.my portal.

National Statistics Day (MyStats Day) is on Oct 20 every year and the theme of the MyStats Day celebration is ‘Statistik Nadi Kehidupan’.
