Penang to check with AirAsia on planned Chengdu service

31/01/2020 06:53 PM

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 31 -- The Penang state government will follow up with AirAsia on the airline's plan to operate a new route between Penang and Chengdu, China in view of the current novel coronavirus situation.

State Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin noted that the direct flights are scheduled to commence on March 8.

"Due to the current situation (on the coronavirus), we will follow up with AirAsia to see if there are any changes," he told reporters near here today.

Yeoh had earlier attended a pre-event promotion for the sixth edition of the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2020 (HAB2020) taking place at Padang Polo here tomorrow and on Sunday.

In a statement on Jan 10, AirAsia Malaysia chief executive officer Riad Asmat said the additional route with three weekly flights would continue to boost visitor arrivals into Penang and vice-versa.

Yeoh, meanwhile, said the HAB2020 will have face masks and hand sanitisers for the public in an effort to curb the coronavirus infection.

All mega events in the state, as well as functions organised by private organisations should also have those items, he added.
