TAWAU, Jan 13 -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here seized 17 kg of syabu worth about RM2.5 million at Batu Payung beach near here on Saturday (Jan 11).
Tawau Maritime Zone director Maritime Captain V. Siva Kumar said the drugs were discovered during a patrol about 8.45 pm by an MMEA team in the waters off Tawau.
He said the team spotted a speedboat about 2.6 nautical miles southeast of Batu Payung beach and tailed it for about five minutes before those in the boat sped off to the middle of the sea after noticing the presence of the MMEA personnel.
The team also spotted two men behaving in a suspicious manner at the beach.
He said the men fled when approached, leaving behind a yellow bag containing 17 packages wrapped in black plastic.
The drugs were found inside the packages of Chinese tea, he told a press conference here today.
