GEORGE TOWN, Oct 22 -- Water supply to about 200,000 consumers in the southern areas of Penang Island has been normalised in stages from 10 pm yesterday after repair works on the 900mm water pipeline burst had been completed.
Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (PBAPP) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Jaseni Maidinsa said the repair works on the burst pipe segment which was buried under a service road next to the Pallazia commercial complex was successfully completed as scheduled, within 12 hours.
"The National Water Services Commission’s (SPAN) key performance indicator for unscheduled water supply interruptions involving pipelines with a diameter above 600mm is 48 hours.
"In this case, the PBAPP team normalised water supply for about 200,000 consumers in a 12 to 24-hour timespan. This achievement was due to the hard work and commitment of the PBAPP team, which is dedicated towards minimising inconveniences to Penang water consumers," he said in a statement, here today.
Jaseni said water supply service for consumers in 15 affected areas from Jalan Bukit Gambir to Bayan Lepas including Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang International Airport, Penang Education Department and Sekolah Menengah Bukit Jambul, Relau and Bayan Lepas, were normalised in stages from 10 pm yesterday after a 12-hour water disruption from 10 am.
Meanwhile, water supply services for consumers in Persiaran Kelicap, Gertak Sanggul, Teluk Kumbar and Bukit Penara in Balik Pulau areas were normalised as at 10 am today, after a 24-hour scheduled water supply interruption, he said.
"PBAPP thanks all affected water consumers for their patience, understanding and cooperation in storing sufficient water for use during the scheduled water supply interruption," he added.
