LAHAD DATU, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- The Sabah Region 4 Marine Police Force (MPF) arrested five illegal immigrants from the Philippines in an operation dubbed ‘Ops Gelora’ off Tagupi Beach near here, last night.
Its commander ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said the men, aged between 18 and 50 years, were detained at 10.40 pm, while waiting for a boat to Bongao, Philippines.
“While on a patrol to prevent sea and coastal crime, MPF personnel came across a number of suspicious individuals on Tagupi Beach.
“Initial inspection found that the suspects failed to produce valid identity documents for which they will be investigated under Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1963," he said in a statement here today.
At the same beach area, Mohamad Pajeri said three motorcycles worth RM15,500 were left abandoned and were suspected of being used to transport illegal immigrants.
Earlier, at 12.30 pm, Jeri Mohamad said police also foiled an attempt to smuggle 78 bottles of Tanduay brand liquor from the Philippines.
“The liquor bottles were found in a suspicious package and dumped on Tagupi Beach. It is believed the liquor was illegally brought in from a neighbouring country to be marketed in Sabah,” he added.
According to him, the contraband worth about RM3,900 was taken to the Lahad Datu MPF Operations Headquarters for further action under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
