KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 – The UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) and Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) ‘Start Your Impossible’ initiative for differently-abled children to participate in sports will begin with a fundraiser fun run.
UMWT deputy chairman, Akio Takeyama, said the proceeds will be channelled to the MPC ‘Fitness and Exercise with Person with Disabilities’ programme.
"The funds will be used to equip para-athlete trainers around the Klang Valley with skills to train differently-abled children.
"We believe that this will be a sustained effort to discover more hidden talent among children with disability and help them achieve their dream in sports," he said at a media briefing today also attended by campaign ambassador and Paralympic gold medallist, Abdul Latif Romly.
In an update to reporters on his athletics career, Abdul Latif said he is currently in his first week of training after winning the 2019 Malaysian Athletics Championships in the long jump event on Aug 18 which saw him defeating normal athletes.
The Perlis-born athlete said the training is in preparation for the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai this November.
"Right now, I’m training like normal for the World Para Championships and 2022 Asian Para Games.
"My aim is to defend the gold medal, and insyaAllah, break the world record again in the T20 long jump," said Abdul Latif who holds the world record (7.64m) in the T20 long jump category.
