KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- Reigning champion, Ivan Yuen kicked off his title defence in style by cruising into the quarter-finals of the 2019 National Squash Championships at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil here, today.
The second seed who received a bye in the opening round made a short work of Muhammad Hafiz Zhafri Abd Harif with a resounding 11-3, 11-3 and 11-4 win in the second round.
Top seed Ng Eain Yow also advanced into the last eight after edging Muhammad Aqif Ampandi, 11-4, 11-5 and 11-5 in another second-round tie.
Meanwhile, Malaysia-born Sanjay Jeeva, who is currently pursuing his further studies in the United States, pulled off a surprise 11-7, 4-11, 11-7, 6-11 and 12-10 victory over national player Muhammad Syafiq Kamal.
In the women's premier division, reigning national champion, S. Sivasangari advanced straight into quarter-finals by defeating Teoh Liyen,11-6, 11-2 and 11-5 in the opening round match.
Based on the tournament’s format, the winner in the women's premier division opener advances straight into the quarter-finals.
