KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) -- Muslims are encouraged to join the wakaf tanah (land endowment) programme  in Setiu, Terengganu, to help finance the education of orphans or poor people in the area.

Chief executive officer of Yayasan Waqaf Pendidikan Anak Yatim atau Miskin Malaysia (YAWATIM), Rusli Hasnan said contributions could be as low as RM30.

He said the wakaf tanah was for an educational fund for orphans or poor to further their studies at University College Bestari (UCB) and learning institutes set up under the Pertubuhan Kebajikan Anak Yatim Malaysia (PEYATIM).

He said the participation in the waqaf programme could be done through PEYATIM's agents such as Pos Malaysia, Bank Simpanan Nasional, Bank Islam, Bank Rakyat, Mydin and online.

UCB, founded in 1998, has about 1,200 students undergoing various programmes at the Diploma, Degree and Master's degree levels in various fields of expertise and academics.

"UCB is also planning to get full university status by next year ... hopefully," he said here.
