IPOH, May 7  (Bernama) -- The Perak government is intensifying efforts to boost the state’s tourism sector, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

He said these included the setting up of the Perak Tourism Action Council.

The gazetting of Pulau Pangkor as a tax-free island  from January next year will further spur foreign and domestic tourism arrivals to the state, he said at an agreement signing ceremony between Scanda Sky and  Malaysia Airlines Berhad here today.

Under the agreement , the charter flight company and MAS will provide flights from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh and onwards  to Guangzhou, China.

The inaugural flight is due in October but other details are not available as yet.

At the press conference afterwards, the menteri besar said that he was optimistic that the development would make Perak the gateway for tourist arrivals from southern China.

Meanwhile, at a separate function, the menteri besar urged government-linked companies, corporate entities and  NGOs to work together with the state government to do studies on natural treasures in the state.

"This effort will  promote Perak especially in the tourism sector,” he told reporters after launching the coffee table book “Rafflesia- Conservation Efforts and Management At Royal Belum State Park” here.

The book, a joint effort by Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Perak State Parks Corporation, was published to raise awareness on the importance of conserving the Royal Belum Park in Gerik.

On other matters, Ahmad Faizal Azumu said the Pakatan  Harapan government in Perak had done well in its first year in power in the state.

He said that he would list out the successes in a special interview on May 12 and listed the RM50 million surplus budget for  next year, building 34,000 affordable homes, drawing FDI and combating illegal logging among the highlights.

On a personal note, he said that he had proved naysayers who predicted that he would only be a menteri besar for a matter of days wrong.
