KUCHING, April 25 (Bernama) -- The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah today went on a walkabout at the India Street Pedestrian Mall here today.
Accompanying their Majesties on the trip at 4.35 pm to the shopping area which is popular among locals were Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar, and Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
They spent more than an hour visiting several shops at the pedestrian mall, creating history as the first royal couple to visit India Street.
They also stopped at Jubilee Restaurant, an Indian-Muslim outlet which is popular for its ‘nasi briyani kambing’ dish and sampled its roti canai and drinks.
The royal couple stopped by at the handicraft stalls and fabric shops, while the colourful murals along the street walls also caught their attention.
They also consented to accept a gift of Sarawak woven cloth which symbolise the harmony and diversity of the people of the state from chairman of the India Street Traders Association Datuk Wee Hong Seng.
Later, they left for tea at the James Brooke Bistro & Café at the Kuching Waterfront.
Sultan Abdullah and Tunku Azizah are scheduled to attend a dinner event at the Hotel Waterfront here at 8.30 p.m. and later view the “Musical Fountain” at the Kuching Waterfront at 10.05 pm.
