KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- Senator Datuk Rabiah Ali has proposed that vehicles from Singapore with outstanding summonses should be barred from leaving the country until they settled the amount owed.

She said the proposal aimed at curbing the habit of Singaporean drivers who were using the country’s highways as testing ground for their vehicles’ speed.

“The problem pertaining to the illegal racing and reckless driving by luxury car drivers and high-powered motorcycles from Singapore has been a tough challenge for us to solve.

“The North-South Expressway (PLUS) from Johor Bahru to Melaka has become the test circuit for their luxury vehicles almost every week,” she said this when when debating the proposed mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan at the Dewan Negara, here today.

She said maximum fine amount should also be imposed on foreign vehicles and they should be prohibited from leaving the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) until they paid up the summonses.

Meanwhile, during the debate, Senator Datuk Yahaya Mat Ghani @ Abbas also proposed to the government to formulate a law pertaining the sale of government assets to ensure that they were protected and not to bring losses to the country and the people.

“It is also to prevent the assets from being sold and owned by foreigners as it will affect the local people’s interest,” he said.

He added that such a law was necessary to avoid government’s assets from being sold to cronies and other stakeholders.
