LIMA, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday pledged to extradite former president Alejandro Toledo from the United States (US) to face corruption charges.
Vizcarra said he would strive to extradite Toledo, who is in California, before the end of his term in 2021.
"Before I leave office, ex-president Toledo will be here facing justice. That is my pledge," Xinhua news agency quoted Vizcarra as telling reporters.
Toledo, in office during 2001-2006, is charged with having received US$20 million in bribes from Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht in exchange for the contract to build the Interoceanic Highway linking Peru and Brazil.
Peru's foreign and justice ministries are "permanently following up" on the extradition request, which was filed on May 25, according to Vizcarra.
