UCSI holds 31st Convocation Ceremony

20/08/2018 08:47 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) – ‘Where there is a will, there is a way’, was the message conveyed by UCSI University vice-chancellor, president and senior professor, Datuk Dr Khalid Yusoff, at the institution’s 31st convocation ceremony over the weekend, to its new graduates.

Held at the Dewan Tan Sri Ahmad Razali, he told the 2,445 students that “having entered the top 2% of the 2019 QS World University Rankings, it is now the duty of all to strive to maintain this good reputation and achieve better”.

The QS World University Rankings is an annual table of the top universities in the world. The pecking order is based on four key pillars: research, teaching, employability and internationalisation. UCSI has achieved a ranking of 481.

“UCSI’s students are prepared well to face life and career. We believe our graduates are ready to take the next step,” Prof Khalid added.

While he may have been a weak student at school, Gary Poh Kwor Xiang, 23, thanks UCSI for nurturing his love for science. He received his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Chemical Engineering scroll at the ceremony and was also chosen as this year’s valedictorian.

An example of someone who reaches for the stars, he was selected in 2017 to attend Imperial College London, UK where he pursued research in nanorobotics. His experience has enabled him to join a renowned company in Japan.

Cherish Chong Chiu Wern, 26, who received her Doctor of Medicine degree and the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award at the ceremony, is extraordinary because even before finishing her studies, she was selected by Harvard University to attend the Harvard Medical School Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program in 2014. She is the university’s first student to achieve this.

Every year, UCSI students are selected by renowned universities to be involved in high-impact research, which enhances the learning process, a statement from the university read.

To add to the university’s achievements, several of its alumnus have made it to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list as exceptional entrepreneurs.
