Charity programmes should be ongoing, not just during Ramadan - Johor exco

ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 26 (Bernama) -- Charitable activities should not only be carried out in the month of Ramadan but should be ongoing throughout the year, said Youth, Sports, Cooperatives and Entrepreneurship Development Committee chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali. 

He said programmes for the poor and needy should be continued after Ramadan to relief the daily burden of the destitutes.

"During the month of Ramadan we see increased charity and generosity but helping the asnaf and the needy should not be a seasonal practice,” he told reporters after flagging off the "Ziarah Kasih Ihya Ramadan” programme organised by the Johor Entrepreneur Development Council (MPUNJ), here today.

Sheikh Umar said the programme which is into its fifth year, had in the first three years organised the distribution of bubur lambuk but beginning last year the poor were given essential items and duit raya.

He said in today’s programme,  24 vehicles were mobilised to travel in a convoy in distributing daily necessities and duit raya to 101 eligible recipients in Johor Bahru, Kulai and Pontian areas.

“God willing, next year with additional manpower and increased funds the programme will be expanded to Kluang and Simpang Renggam," he said adding that the donation this year had been raised by 50 agencies  under MPUNJ.
