MASTRA SUPPORTS NSPC'S CALL ON CABOTAGE POLICY

18/12/2018 01:25 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- The Maritime Strategic Association of Malaysia (Mastra) is supporting the National Shipping and Port Council’s (NSPC) call for the government to withdraw the exemption of cabotage on transshipment of goods from ports in the Peninsula to Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

The association viewed the policy on exemption of cabotage as a step backwards which would threaten the survival of not only the shipping industry but the entire local maritime industry.

“The policy also contravenes the Malaysia Shipping Master Plan 2017-2022, where it targets 90 per cent of domestic sea transportation to use local shipping services,” it said in a statement today.

Mastra said dependency on foreign ships had resulted in a deficit to the balance of payments, resulting in “invisible” deficits to local shipping services of RM25 billion in 2016.

“The situation has worsened following the removal of the cabotage on June 1, 2017,” it added.
