RTM TARGETS GLOBAL PRESENCE IN 3-5 YEARS - ASHWAD

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 (Bernama) -- Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) will continue to evolve at pace in line with technological advances and the modern media landscape, as it seeks to play a more assertive role internationally, said Broadcasting director-general Ashwad Ismail.

He said he aims to take the RTM brand global within the next three to five years, adding that this is achievable given Malaysia’s unique and strategic position on the world stage.

“We are in ASEAN, one of the most peaceful and stable regions, which is set to become the world’s third-largest economic bloc, not just in population but in its diversity of races, cultures and religions. In this context, our media needs to be bolder as we move forward.

“We have taken the first step towards the international stage with the launch of RTM World, a platform to position us as a global player and present RTM as a gateway to ASEAN,” he said.

Ashwad said this during a special interview at Angkasapuri today, in conjunction with RTM’s 80th anniversary.

He said RTM, aiming for a global presence, has partnered with media players across ASEAN and strategic news organisations in Europe, the United States, China, and other public broadcasters worldwide.

“To reach the global stage, this isn’t just my role; it takes the combined efforts of RTM’s 4,000 staff as ambassadors, helping to promote the RTM name internationally through discussions and dialogues worldwide.

“I believe all divisions and units within RTM already have the strength to move forward; the key now is being more creative in understanding what audiences and readers want to see and hear,” he said.

He added that RTM’s priority is to remain a trusted source of information while also educating, entertaining, and inspiring audiences.

“Today, one of the biggest challenges in staying a trusted source is how quickly we can tackle and counter fake news,” he added.
