KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- As Malaysia commemorates its 68th year of independence, citizens are reminded that Merdeka is not merely a date on the calendar, nor just a moment to wave the Jalur Gemilang with pride.
In a statement today, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, an advocate for a United Malaysia, said it should serve as a call for all citizens to reinforce the core values that form the foundation of the nation.
“The true strength of a nation lies not only in its economy or physical development, but in the moral fibre of its citizens.
“Beginning with our political leadership, we must cultivate good moral values, uphold integrity in all that we do, and practice compassion towards our fellow Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, or background. Integrity must be our compass, guiding us to do what is right even when no one is watching.
“Compassion must be our bridge, uniting us through understanding, kindness, and empathy,” he said.
In the spirit of National Day, Lee urged all Malaysians to pledge their commitment towards building a nation that is not only prosperous, but also just and principled, not only modern, but also moral, not only strong, but also selfless.
"Let the values we live by be the true measure of our independence. May we pass on to future generations a Malaysia that is united, dignified, and ever compassionate.
"Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan Ke-68,” he added.
