GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- An agreement on the Perak-Penang Water Project is expected to be signed by the end of next week, with negotiations between the two parties now in their final stages.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the signing ceremony is expected to take place in Ipoh, Perak, although it remains subject to the completion of final negotiations between the two sides.

“Various technical aspects are still being refined by experts and officials from both parties to ensure that all terms of the agreement are mutually agreed upon.

“Everything is being discussed, including pricing. However, in reviewing the agreement, there is a substantial amount of technical language and expert input that must be scrutinised and agreed upon by both parties before it can be signed,” he said at a press conference after the 26th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of PBA Holdings Bhd (PBAHB) here today.

The Perak-Penang Water Project is a strategic mega project involving the transfer of raw and treated water to meet growing demand in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. It is aimed at supporting both domestic and industrial water needs in Penang.

Meanwhile, commenting on the proposed Jelutong landfill rehabilitation site and a sea reclamation project along Persiaran Karpal Singh, Chow said a decision would be announced after the state government receives feedback from the concessionaire on proposals submitted by the state government and the Department of Environment (DOE).

He said the views of local residents who oppose the projects are also being taken into consideration in discussions between the state government and the company involved.
