MELAKA, April 30 (Bernama) -- The government, through the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), allocated RM1.8 million last year to upgrade drainage systems in several identified flash flood hotspots within the Ayer Keroh state constituency.
Ayer Keroh assemblyman Kerk Chee Yee said the special allocation was used to carry out upgrades to main drains at hotspot locations, thereby reducing the frequency of flooding that had previously occurred.
“About 15 flash flood hotspots in the Ayer Keroh constituency were identified, and during heavy rain, these areas would be hit by floods around five to six times a year.
“Now, the frequency has shown a significant decline following the implementation of various projects under the allocation to address flash flood issues in this area,” he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Cleanliness Campaign and Home Repair Programme in Sungai Putat here today.
Earlier, the programme, held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) Programme for the Ayer Keroh constituency, was officiated by Deputy State Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd, and was also attended by Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) president Datuk Sapiah Haron.
Kerk said that in addition to the KPKT allocation, among the key ongoing projects is the Sungai Putat Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB), which is expected to be completed in 2027 and includes the construction of retention ponds, drainage system upgrades and a pump house.
