KOTA BHARU, April 18 (Bernama) -- Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud has expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, particularly Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for its commitment to upgrading the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP) here.
He said the project, implemented under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), is the largest upgrade effort since the airport was built.
“This project involves the expansion of the terminal as well as the extension of the runway from 2,400 metres to 2,800 metres, enabling the operation of larger, international-class aircraft,” he said when speaking at the opening ceremony of the new LTSIP terminal here today.
According to Mohd Nassuruddin, the comprehensive upgrade will allow LTSIP to handle international flights, including the Kota Bharu-Jakarta route, which is expected to commence operations in June.
He said this will be a catalyst for more dynamic and sustainable economic growth in the state, benefiting the people of Kelantan.
Meanwhile, Mohd Nassuruddin said the construction of the Palekbang Bridge to Kota Bharu, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, will further enhance connectivity in the state.
He said the bridge will improve links between the two districts and strengthen a strategic route connecting the Malaysia-Thailand border to the airport more efficiently.
“This will give Kelantan an advantage to emerge as a key gateway to the region, further strengthening its role as a regional hub for connectivity, trade and tourism,” he said.
Earlier today, Anwar officiated the LTSIP, witnessed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
