KUCHING, March 30 (Bernama) -- Advancements in financial technology are now making daily transactions easier for the public, as digital payment applications such as S PAY GLOBAL are increasingly becoming the preferred choice among users in Sarawak for various types of transactions.

Originally launched as SarawakPay before being rebranded as S PAY GLOBAL, the e-wallet application was developed by SiliconNet Technologies Sdn Bhd and introduced in 2017 as part of a digitalisation initiative.

Since its introduction, S PAY GLOBAL, a key initiative of the Sarawak government, has continued to grow with the addition of various features, and has also been entrusted with channelling state government aid to the people, thereby encouraging wider adoption among the public.

S PAY GLOBAL user Kelvin Liew You Hong, 36, said the application has greatly helped him manage his monthly commitments more efficiently and quickly.

“I use the application to pay my water bills, telco and Astro. Everything can be done within a single app, so it saves time and is more convenient without having to queue and wait at the counter,” he said when met by Bernama here recently.

The S PAY GLOBAL application also enables users to carry out various cashless transactions, including utility bill payments, online purchases, money transfers, and QR code payments at business premises.

Supporting several key objectives of the service’s implementation, including strengthening the cashless digital economy through a secure and inclusive payment system, the service also covers both urban and rural areas in Sarawak.

For Azureen Abdul Kadir, 33, she prefers making payments using the QR code function provided by the application as it is more convenient and time-saving.

“Nowadays, most shops use QR codes, so I only need to scan and make a payment instantly without having to carry cash.

“It is not only more practical, but also feels safer as I do not have to worry about losing money or handling small change,” she said, adding that it also helps reduce reliance on cash in daily life.

She added that she also fully utilises the application to repay her National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan, in addition to handling daily transactions, as payments can be completed with just a few clicks.

Currently, S PAY GLOBAL has 1.6 million registered users, driving the adoption of cashless transactions across Sarawak and expanding beyond the state.

The application continues to reflect ongoing evolution in digital financial services, including extending beyond domestic use through integration with payment networks such as UnionPay and DuitNow.

These efforts also support the growth of e-commerce as well as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by providing broader digital payment facilities and infrastructure to local businesses and rural communities without access to banking services.
