Fasting Since Primary Six, Adam Finally Embraces Islam

KEPALA BATAS, March 14 (Bernama) -- While his friends waited for the time to break fast at the mosque, Muhammad Adam Abdullah, who was not yet a Muslim at the time, also endured hunger and thirst alongside them.

It all began when Muhammad Adam, 23, fondly known as Adam, was in Primary Six. His curiosity about Islam led him to frequently follow his friends to the mosque and even try fasting although he had not yet embraced the religion.

Sharing his life journey, he said his interest in Islam began during his primary school years before he eventually embraced the religion officially last year.

“Since Primary Six, I had already started fasting. I often followed my friends to the mosque and broke fast with them there. Even then I had already begun to feel attracted to Islam.

“My interest deepened when the religious teacher at school often shared stories and explained Islamic teachings gradually. The ustaz would share a little at a time about Islam, about the way Muslims live, and from there I understood it step by step before I began studying Islam seriously three years ago,” he told Bernama when met here today.

He was met after attending the Jamaie Iftar and Aidilfitri contribution presentation ceremony for new converts at Masjid Jamek Ar Rahman in Permatang Rambai, Penaga here, which was also attended by Penang Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Taib and his wife Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah.

Muhammad Adam said the curiosity nurtured since childhood eventually led him to make a major decision in his life when he embraced Islam in April last year after being brought by a friend to obtain further explanation at the Penang State Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIPP).

He married his wife Nursyafiqah Husna Mohamad last October, and the youngest of three siblings said his family only learned about his decision to embrace Islam after he got married.

“So far my family can accept that I have embraced Islam and within the past two months I celebrated two festivals, Chinese New Year and Aidilfitri. In fact during Chinese New Year last month, I returned home to celebrate with my parents and family,” said Adam, who works as a cashier at a petrol station in Bayan Lepas near here.

He also said he was happy and grateful to receive assistance as a new convert this year, which he will use to prepare for Hari Raya.

At the ceremony, 150 converts received contributions from the Zakat of the Penang State Islamic Religious Council (MAINPP).
