IIUM Lecturer Says She Was In Bukit Aman as A Witness

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 (Bernama) -- International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) political science lecturer Prof Dr Syaza Farhana Mohamad Shukri said her presence at Bukit Aman on March 10 was as a witness in a police investigation related to a media report that quoted her statement in 2024.

Syaza Farhana said she was not called in as a suspect in the probe regarding her views published in a South China Morning Post report on Dec 26, 2024 about the role of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the Pulau Batu Puteh issue.

“So… I want to clarify that the police called me not because they wanted to investigate my quote, but as a witness. The questioning session lasted about one and a half hours.

“From the time they (police) called me, I did find it unusual. So I asked why (I was being called), and they said it was only as a witness,” she told Bernama when contacted today.

Meanwhile, the IIUM Political Science Students’ Association, in a statement today, also questioned the motive behind Bukit Aman’s action, stressing that Syaza Farhana’s remarks were made in good faith and reflected academic freedom in Malaysia as well as university autonomy from political interference.
