KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience — indulging in an array of cakes and pastries at a picnic-style gathering set against the iconic backdrop of the Kuala Lumpur Tower here.
Organised by Vanillicious Baking Studio owner Syahirah Mohamad Kasim, yesterday’s event, dubbed Cakenic: A Garden Picnic, saw over 300 cake and pastry enthusiasts bringing their homemade creations to the unconventional open-air “buffet”.

Now in its seventh edition, Cakenic introduced a fresh twist with its classic theme. The participants donned traditional Malay attire, while their cake decorations were inspired by traditional Malay kuih.
Syahirah, 33, said the “cake picnic” concept is not only unique but also serves as an ideal platform for cake makers from different states to gather and interact.
“We want to bring together people who share a passion for baking. We also encourage participants to dress up as each edition comes with its own fashion theme,” she said.

She said the idea for Cakenic was sparked after algorithms about the concept appeared on her social media feeds, prompting her to try something that had never been organised in Malaysia before.
The first edition of Cakenic was held in Putrajaya in May last year. The event received an overwhelming response, which encouraged Syahirah to take it to Johor following strong demand. It has also since been held in Penang and Perak.
“So far, all editions have been held outdoors and never indoors. Weather conditions are definitely our biggest challenge, but, thankfully, so far, it has been manageable,” she said, adding that the participation fee is set at RM68 per person.

Meanwhile, Cakenic participant Farah Malina Mansor, 40, said she was thrilled to have the opportunity to reconnect with old friends from her school days, as well as exchange recipes and cake-making techniques.

For Azzyyati Mohd Yusof, 40, a tailor, laid-back activities such as Cakenic serve as a form of emotional therapy, particularly for women juggling careers and family responsibilities.
“I see this as time for myself. I can momentarily set aside household responsibilities and simply enjoy the moment with friends because activities like this have a positive impact on emotional well-being,” she said, adding that the songket-themed outfit she wore to the event was sewn by her.
