KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Bernama) –The beauty of traditional Malay songs once again echoed majestically through the prestigious Petronas Philharmonic Hall (DFP) last Saturday night, evoking treasured memories while elevating the legacy of cultural heritage on a grand stage.

With the powerful accompaniment of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) led by seasoned conductor Ahmad Muriz Che Rose, the two-hour Konsert Simfoni Budaya II (Culture of Symphony II Concert) felt all too short for a complete journey through the nostalgic world of traditional Malay music.

The evening opened in the hushed grandeur of the concert hall with an emotionally stirring orchestral instrumental, Burung Pungguk, setting the tone for more than 16 pieces performed in this second edition. It successfully captivated the hearts of all present with the rich and mesmerising flow of heritage rhythms.

The atmosphere was further enlivened by the appearance of legendary traditional Malay singer Datuk Andre Goh, who performed his own composition Dikirim Jangan Dipesan Jangan, recorded in 1973, heating up the already vibrant hall.

“I wrote this song myself, back when recordings were still done on vinyl. I’m grateful to have experienced all this. I never imagined I’d be singing this song on such a prestigious stage today,” he said.

“These traditional Malay songs are old classics. I hope today’s youth, especially Malay youth, never forget these songs—they are our heritage and our identity. I’m not against new music, but let’s not forget the songs that define us,” he added, before performing Mas Merah.

The richness of the Malay traditional music repertoire continued with Zehra Zambri making her DFP debut, performing Suka Sama Suka as a duet with Goh, followed by solo renditions of Tudung Periuk and Semalakama.

Her sweet yet powerful vocals brought life to the hall, drawing laughter and cheers when she teased Goh: “It’s only mutual love in the song, Datuk.”

The emotional atmosphere continued as Hazra Dollah took the stage, singing Anggerik Desa and Simfoni Bunga Tanjung, showcasing her remarkable ability to deliver traditional songs with great finesse.

The prestigious stage also provided a platform for rising young singer Danial Chuer, who wowed the audience with his renditions of Nirmala and Fatwa Pujangga, delivered in his unique style—revealing a rarely seen traditional side of him.

“I don’t often get the chance to show my traditional side, so I immediately said yes when offered this showcase. I grew up with songs like these, and performing with an orchestra has always been on my bucket list,” he said, drawing enthusiastic applause.

One of the most delightful moments of the night came toward the end, with a lively duet between Hazra and Rojer Kajol performing Joget Burung Merpati. The performance brought nearly the entire hall to their feet to dance along, transforming the usually formal DFP into a vibrant cultural celebration.

The evening concluded with a group performance of Laksamana Raja Di Laut by all five singers, ending with thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the audience.

Konsert Simfoni Budaya II proved that Malay heritage is not merely a memory of the past, but a living heartbeat that continues to unite generations.
