PUTRAJAYA, June 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has welcomed the announcement of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States (US) and Iran, describing it as a significant step towards de-escalation in West Asia and a structured pathway towards a comprehensive and lasting settlement.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Malaysia expressed its appreciation to the governments of Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and other regional countries for their respective roles in supporting diplomatic efforts and dialogue between the parties.
It noted that Malaysia also acknowledged the constructive engagement and political will demonstrated by all parties in advancing efforts to reduce tensions and promote peace and stability.
“Malaysia looks forward to the commencement of further negotiations towards a final agreement following the signing of the MoU in Switzerland, scheduled for 19 June 2026, and the verification of initial implementation measures,” it said in a statement on Monday
It said these measures include maritime security arrangements, phased sanctions relief and other confidence-building measures as outlined by the parties.
The measures are expected to contribute to a durable cessation of hostilities, enhanced regional stability, the safeguarding of freedom of navigation along the Strait of Hormuz, and the strengthening of the global economy and energy security.
The ministry said that Malaysia remains unequivocal in its view that lasting peace can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect.
It also said that it stood ready to support all constructive initiatives that contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as justice and prosperity.
