KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- The signature Kaili sour soup of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province was showcased at the recent 2026 World Brand Moganshan Summit, promoting the region's industrial development and business potential to investors and guests across China.
The Bureau of Commerce of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture deputy director, Yang Yufang said the total output value of Qiandongnan’s sour soup industrial chain reached 8.154 billion Chinese yuan in 2025. (100 Chinese yuan = RM58.43)
Currently, the prefecture has 60 sour soup enterprises and 117 production lines with annual production capacity exceeding 290,000 tonnes. Major companies including Haitian, New Hope and Guangdong Agribusiness have expressed interest in cooperation.
During the summit, Qiandongnan announced a two million Chinese yuan subsidy programme to support market expansion through restaurant chains, e-commerce and exhibitions.
The prefecture also promoted three investment projects related to sour soup restaurant development, intelligent production lines and new consumer experiences, with planned investment totalling more than 180 million Chinese yuan.
According to the bureau in a statement, the summit provided an important platform for Kaili sour soup to reach broader markets, further boosting the influence of Qiandongnan's speciality food industry and cultural tourism resources.
With a history of more than 1,000 years, Kaili sour soup is regarded as a signature dish of Guizhou cuisine and an important part of Miao and Dong food culture. Its popularity has expanded nationwide through Guizhou’s grassroots sporting events, turning it into a must-try dish for tourists visiting the province.
Qiandongnan’s ecological environment has also supported the industry’s growth, with forest coverage exceeding 70 per cent and water quality ranking among the best in China at the prefecture level.
Kaili sour soup has also been recognised as a national geographical indication product, while Kaili was named the Capital of Sour Soup Cuisine. The traditional Kaili sour soup fish cooking technique has additionally been included on China’s national intangible cultural heritage list.
