LABUAN, May 19 (Bernama) -- Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia (CILTM) Sabah jointly hosted an engagement session with the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) recently to discuss operational issues related to licensing, permits and regulatory compliance.

Megah Port managing director Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong said the session provided a practical platform for industry players to raise concerns directly with the relevant agencies, particularly on matters affecting commercial vehicle operations, port logistics and cargo movement.

He said the logistics sector played a crucial role in supporting Labuan’s port operations, oil and gas activities, consumer supply chain and overall economic ecosystem.

“Efficient logistics and transport services are important to ensure that cargo movement in and out of Labuan remains smooth, competitive and compliant with existing regulations.

“This engagement allows industry players to obtain clearer guidance from LPKP and JPJ, while enabling the agencies to understand better the challenges faced on the ground,” he told Bernama today.

Tiong said several issues related to commercial vehicle licensing, permit applications, road transport compliance, trailer usage and operational requirements were highlighted during the session attended by more than 20 representatives from logistics and transport companies.

He said industry players also raised the need for LPKP to establish a branch or service counter in Labuan to facilitate licensing and permit matters, as the agency is currently based in Kota Kinabalu.

He said having an LPKP presence in Labuan would help reduce delays, improve accessibility for transport operators and provide faster guidance on applications, renewals and compliance matters involving commercial vehicles.

“Labuan has its own logistics requirements due to its island status, port operations and growing role as an oil and gas support base.

“A local LPKP presence will greatly assist industry players and help ensure regulatory matters can be handled more efficiently,” he said.

In addition, LPKP deputy director Boney Joumil said the proposal to establish an LPKP branch or service counter in Labuan would be brought to the board for consideration and decision.

Meanwhile, CILTM Sabah president Daniel Doughty said the organisation would submit formal letters to LPKP and JPJ on policy matters raised during the engagement session for the agencies’ consideration, including areas that may require review or amendment to reflect Labuan’s operational needs better.

He said the proposed submissions would help ensure industry feedback was properly documented and channelled through the appropriate process.

“CILTM Sabah will continue to play a bridging role between industry players and government agencies to support practical, safe and efficient logistics operations,” he said.
