ANTONSEN STUNS KUNLAVUT TO WIN THAILAND OPEN

BANGKOK, May 17 (Bernama) -- Denmark’s top men’s singles shuttler Anders Antonsen stunned home favourite and second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn to clinch the Thailand Open title at Nimibutr Stadium today.

The world number three won the thrilling one-hour and 37-minute encounter 9-21, 24-22, 21-18 against current world number two for his first title this year after advancing to the final when following the withdrawal of top seed Shi Yuqi during their semi-final  match yesterday.

“I’m lost for words right now. It was an amazing experience out there once again. Last year was insane as well, but to get the win this year feels incredible,” he told reporters after the match.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles final, world number three Akane Yamaguchi of Japan defeated China’s world number four Chen Yufei 21-14, 21-18 in 39 minutes.

In the men’s doubles final, Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin upset top seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in straight games, 21-12, 25-23, in 53 minutes, while in the women’s doubles final, China’s Bao Lijing-Cao Zihan defeated Japan’s Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi 19-21, 21-16, 21-19 in a 72-minute battle.

In the mixed doubles final, second seeds Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Bøje of Denmark beat China’s Zhu Yijun-Li Qian 21-17, 21-15.
