TEMERLOH, May 13 (Bernama) -- Nomination day for the Youth Parliament Election has been set for Aug 8, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

He said this would allow those elected the opportunity to attend the Dewan Rakyat sitting when it resumes in October.

Johari said the initiative was aimed, among others, at providing early exposure to the younger generation on the institution of Parliament.

“This is an effort to strengthen the country’s future by giving young people the opportunity to understand the functions and role of Parliament from an early stage,” he told reporters after an engagement session with staff of the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) here today.

Johari said that so far, 12 parties involving university students had registered for the election.

“Party registration remains open for youths aged between 18 and 30 who are not university students to establish their own parties,” he said.

Johari said Youth Parliament voters would not be automatically registered, and eligible voters would instead need to sign up through the designated channels, with 300,000 individuals targeted to cast their votes.

He said that in addition to promotions through social media by his office, he himself would travel throughout the country to attract interest and provide face-to-face exposure to young people.

Commenting on today’s programme, Johari said it was part of efforts to provide local residents with an overview and understanding of the implementation and role of the Youth Parliament in producing a generation of youths who are knowledgeable about democracy and leadership.
