EU FOREIGN MINISTERS TO DISCUSS WEST ASIA SITUATION AT MEETING ON MONDAY – KALLAS

16/03/2026 04:53 PM

MOSCOW, March 16 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs ministers will discuss the situation in West Asia and the ways to keep the Strait of Hormuz open during today's ministerial meeting in Brussels, said EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"We will discuss West Asia. And everything that is happening in West Asia is also affecting Ukraine – is also affecting other partners – and there the main topic will be how to keep the Strait of Hormuz open," Kallas said ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels.

On February 28, the United States (US) and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in West Asia.

The escalation around Iran has led to the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for deliveries of oil and liquefied natural gas from the Persian Gulf countries to the global market, and has also affected the level of oil exports and production in the region.
