JAKARTA, March 9 (Bernama) -- Heavy rain and strong winds in Pasuruan regency, East Java, have claimed one life and injured three, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

The incident occurred at about 2 pm local time on Sunday, affecting one village and two residential areas across 10 districts, said Abdul Muhari, Head of BNPB’s Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre.

“The Pasuruan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported that one resident died while three others sustained minor injuries, with assessments of material damage still ongoing,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Abdul Muhari said the incident was among multiple disasters recorded nationwide in the 24 hours until 7 am Monday, with floods and extreme weather dominating the reports.

He said that in the capital city, Jakarta, 23 residential areas across three districts are still flooded due to heavy rain since March 7, forcing 122 people to temporarily evacuate to safer locations.

He said monitoring on Sunday showed that floodwaters in residential areas and several roads had gradually receded.

“In response to the flood, BNPB has distributed food supplies and non-food assistance, including blankets and mattresses, to affected residents, while cloud-seeding operations were carried out to reduce the potential for heavy rainfall in the Greater Jakarta area,” he said.

In Tangerang city, Banten province, heavy rain and strong winds had also triggered flooding in several locations across 10 districts, with 80 households temporarily displaced.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring South Tangerang, floods were recorded at 1.32 am on Sunday, affecting four residential areas across two districts and 1,118 households. The waters subsided later that day.
