KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) sees the need to rebrand the coalition to emerge more progressive and inclusive in line with current public aspirations without abandoning the basis of its struggle and core values.
Its secretary-general, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the matter was among the major focus stressed at the recent BN leadership retreat to strengthen unity, plan strategic measures forward and to bring all component parties together to face current political challenges.
The rebranding needed to be founded on balanced, moderate consensus-based politics, he added.
“Throughout the discussion session that took place openly and honestly, the leadership agreed to stress commitments to ensure unity, strengthen internal strength and ensure that BN remains relevant as the best choice in the country’s dynamic and challenging political landscape.
“The BN leadership also agreed that political consolidation efforts need to be done in an organised, realistic manner and according to current political developments,” he said in a statement today.
The retreat gathered together leaders of BN component parties, UMNO, MCA, MIC, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) and Parti Progresif Penduduk (PPP) as well as the Friends of BN president.
Zambry said the attendance of all major component party leaders reflected the strong spirit of togetherness and shared determination to continue to strengthen the coalition's strength, thus demonstrating the clear commitment that BN will remain an important foundation in Malaysian politics.
The coalition also agreed that all preparations needed to be done from now to face any possibilities, including the Melaka and Johor state elections, as well as the general election, he said.
Zambry also said the retreat also highlighted the joint concern towards the need to maintan the country’s peace and stability, and that BN’s stand on sensitive issues relating to race and religion was that they needed to be tackled through consensus, moderation and political wisdom, which are the traditions that form the strong core of the coalition.
He also reiterated that the BN leadership in the government will continue to carry out their duties will full responsibility, and play constructive roles in strengthening the stability and effectiveness of the Unity Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the people’s well-being and the country’s prosperity.
