ROME, Jan 23 (Bernama-dpa) -- Winter storms have caused severe damage to the Italian coastline and the country's Mediterranean islands, with damage to Sicily alone estimated at €740 million (US$870 million), authorities estimated on Thursday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
High waves, strong gusts and heavy rain also caused damage in Sardinia. On the mainland, Calabria in the south has badly hit. Smaller Italian islands like Lipari and Stromboli were also affected.
Storm Harry swept across the region over recent days. Beaches in Sicily were completely inundated, and roads in coastal areas were knee-deep in water. Restaurants saw their windows shattered by the wind.
The railway track running along the coast between Messina and Catania was left hanging partially in the air after the ground under it was washed away. Waves of 16 metres were reported.
Renato Schifani, regional president of Sicily, announced emergency aid of more than €140 million (US$164 million).
Authorities in Sardinia also spoke of damage totalling several hundred million euros.
Storm Harry also caused severe damage in other Mediterranean countries, including Malta. At least two people were killed in Greece.
