BINTULU, Jan 17 (Bernama) -- Only one temporary flood relief centre (PPS) in Sarawak remains active as of 4 pm today after two centres were closed earlier in the afternoon.

In a statement, the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee said that only the Sebauh Community Hall PPS is still in operation, with 24 victims from 15 families housed at the centre.

“The Dewan Suarah Bintulu PPS, which had accommodated 121 victims from 32 families, was closed at 1.30 pm today.

“The Dewan Sri Kemena PPS at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sebauh, which housed 64 victims from 18 families, was closed at noon,” the statement said.

Flooding in Sarawak began on Dec 31 when several areas around Kuching city were inundated following continuous heavy rain.

Meanwhile, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, via the Public Infobanjir portal, reported that water levels at two stations — Long Teru in Miri and Nanga Lemai B — remain above the danger mark, while only the Stapang B station in Sibu is above the warning level, although all are showing a downward trend.

Water levels at eight other rivers are at the alert level and are also recording a downward trend.
