NABAWAN, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- A man drowned after falling into a river while participating in a white-water rafting activity in Sapulut here this afternoon.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations centre said the victim, identified as Ramli Mayakin, believed to be in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel.

In a statement, it said the department received an emergency call at 12.40 pm and dispatched 12 personnel with fire appliances to the location, about 53 kilometres from the Nabawan Fire and Rescue Station.

“The fire team faced difficulty accessing the site due to narrow routes and unpaved roads. Upon arrival, the operation commander reported that the victim had been found unconscious on the riverbank by members of the public,” the statement said.

Firefighters retrieved the victim from the river before handing the body over to the police for further investigation.

The operation, which involved the police and the Civil Defence Force (APM), ended at 6.30 pm.
