NOT WEARING SEAT BELTS, RUNNING RED LIGHTS TOP PERAK’S TRAFFIC OFFENCES

IPOH, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Failure to wear front seat belts and non-compliance with traffic light regulations were among the highest offences recorded during a special operation on nine major offences by the Perak Road Transport Department (JPJ) last year.

Perak JPJ deputy director Mohd Azmi Jaafar said throughout 2025, a total of 17,218 vehicles were inspected statewide during the special operation, while from Jan 1 to 15, 2026, 1,800 vehicles were inspected, with 167 offences recorded.

He said the special operation was carried out to monitor, detect and take action against road users who violate traffic laws.

“Throughout 2025, a total of 2,191 summonses were issued for failure to wear front seat belts, while 1,066 summonses were issued for traffic light violations. This year, 130 seat belt offences, 19 traffic light violations and 14 cases of mobile phone use were recorded.

“Other offences recorded include not wearing helmets (520), using mobile phones (363), driving on emergency lanes (265), overtaking on double lines (262), queue cutting (59), failure to wear rear seat belts (56), and continuously driving in the right lane (42),” he told reporters after the special operation along Jalan Kuala Kangsar-Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah here today.

In today’s operation, 107 vehicles were inspected and action was taken against 82, comprising 40 cars, 36 motorcycles and six other vehicles. A total of 112 notices were issued, 25 of which involved failure to wear seat belts.

In a separate development, Mohd Azmi said Perak JPJ would continue to step up enforcement against commercial vehicles, including offences involving overloading, through the ongoing implementation of ‘Ops Perang’.

He added that the department would continue to enhance enforcement and accident prevention efforts to ensure the safety of road users in the state.
