KUCHING, Jan 14 (Bernama) -- The number of flood victims housed at temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Sarawak this afternoon fell to 622 people from 194 families, compared with 1,603 people from 498 families this morning.
The Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said four PPS remain operational, involving the areas of Sibu, Bintulu and Sebauh.
It said all five PPS in the Serian Division were closed as of 2 pm today.
“In Sibu, only one PPS remains in operation at Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bukit Assek, housing six victims from one family, while in Bintulu, 282 victims from 85 families are accommodated at the Dewan Suarah Bintulu PPS.
“In Sebauh, the Sebauh Community Hall PPS is sheltering 150 victims, while 184 victims are housed at the Dewan Sri Kemena, SMK Sebauh PPS,” it said in a statement.
The current flood disaster in Sarawak began on Dec 31 last year, when several areas around Kuching city were inundated following continuous heavy rain.
