NEW DELHI, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- A rampaging elephant killed six people, including four members of one family, in the eastern Indian state Jharkhand.
The incident took place late on Tuesday in West Singhbhum district.
Seventeen people have been killed in the area by elephants in the past seven days, local media reported on Wednesday, citing forest officials.
The six people killed in separate incidents on Tuesday included four members of a single family in Bawadia village when the elephant trampled them in their thatch-roofed home.
Elephant movement has also reportedly disrupted some train services in the area in recent days.
Human-animal conflict has grown in India due to urbanisation and infrastructure works encroaching forestland and wildlife-rich zones.
Seven Asian elephants were killed when their herd of 100 was struck by a high-speed train in the north-eastern state of Assam last month.
