BACHOK, Oct 14 (Bernama) – Malaysian Bioeconomy Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (Bioeconomy Corporation) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) to strengthen collaboration to nurture bio-based talent and entrepreneurs.

A joint statement today said the partnership will drive the commercialisation of research and innovation, empower the community through biotechnology adoption and explore bio-based resource potential, particularly in Kelantan.

The MoU aims to promote knowledge exchange and share academic resources, including joint research publication, develop technology platforms, organise community and public programmes and create alternative business models to help increase income in rural communities.

The initiative focuses on efforts to connect universities, industries, communities, and government in line with the quintuple helix collaboration approach outlined in the National Biotechnology Policy 2.0.

Bioeconomy Corporation chief executive officer Mohd Khairul Fidzal Abdul Razak said: “This collaboration reflects our commitment to unlocking the potential of biotechnology and bio-based industries at the grassroots level, especially in Kelantan.

“Together with UMK, we want to ensure that R&D outcomes, knowledge sharing, and innovation in this field are translated into tangible economic opportunities that benefit local communities.

“They can explore new career and entrepreneurship prospects in high-potential areas in this state, such as agricultural biotechnology, bio-based livestock management, waste utilisation, herbal products, and natural wellness," he said.

The MoU aligns with Budget 2026 to invest in R&D, emphasising investment in high-value research and development, and commercialising technological innovations. This supports government efforts to strengthen national economic competitiveness and broaden development opportunities.

Meanwhile, UMK Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Arham Abdullah said the MoU is an important platform for the university to reinforce its role in empowering community development through innovation.

“UMK has always upheld the belief that knowledge must bring value to society. With our academic and research strengths, combined with Bioeconomy Corporation’s expertise in advancing biotechnology and bio-based industries, we are better positioned to address current challenges in this field, including commercialisation barriers, the shortage of highly skilled talent, and low public awareness,” he said.

The initiative also opens opportunities for UMK researchers and students to be directly involved in industrial and community development activities through short courses, community programmes, and collaborations in R&D, providing practical exposure.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang witnessed the MoU exchange at the CRI 2025 & STEM 2025 competition at the Festival of Ideas 2025 held at UMK Bachok today.

The festival brought together ideas, innovations, and intellectual discussions on an open and inclusive platform to strengthen the local innovation ecosystem.
