KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- The floods in Johor have worsened, increasing the number of evacuees, while Perak and Kedah experienced a decline as of this afternoon.
In JOHOR, the number of flash flood victims in Pontian has risen to 159 individuals from 46 families as of 4 pm, up from 107 from 33 families recorded at 11 am today.
State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) chairman, Datuk Asman Shah Abd Rahman, said they have been housed at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Melayu Raya temporary relief centre (PPS), which was opened at 6 am.
He listed the affected villages as Kampung Melayu Raya, Kampung Paya Embun, Kampung Pak Kalib, Kampung Seri Menanti, and Kampung Maju Jaya.
In PERAK, the number of evacuees in the Larut, Matang and Selama district has decreased to 170 individuals from 52 families as of 4 pm, down from 210 from 68 families recorded at 8 am.
The JPBN secretariat, in a statement, confirmed that all evacuees remain sheltered at the same four PPS in Taiping.
It reported that nine individuals from five families are being housed at the PPS in Dewan Serbaguna Taman Kaya, after being relocated from Taman Pengkalan Makmur, Taman Pengkalan Setia, and Kampung Sentosa.
"The PPS at SK Simpang, which serves Taman Mawar, Taman Simpang Makmur, Taman Indah, Kampung Jelapang Jaya, and Taman Kota Jaya, is accommodating 89 evacuees from 27 families," the statement read.
A further 25 from six families are housed at the SK Matang PPS, covering Kampung Matang Jambu and Kampung Telok Kertang, while the PPS at SK Matang Gelugor continues to shelter 47 individuals from 14 families from Kampung Matang Pasir and Kampung Matang Gelugor.
In a separate development, the Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast rain tonight in the Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, and Kinta districts, while all other districts are expected to have fair weather.
In KEDAH, the number of evacuees at a single PPS in Pokok Sena has fallen to 91 individuals from 26 families this afternoon, compared to 200 from 50 families this morning.
Kedah Civil Defence Force deputy director, Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain, said all the evacuees at Pokok Sena Multipurpose Hall are from Taman Puteri and Kampung Sungai Durian in Mukim Gajah Mati.
He confirmed that no rivers in the state have reached a dangerous level, with only five rivers currently at an alert level.
“They are Sungai Muda in Ampang Jajar, Kuala Muda; Sungai Ketil in Kampung Bongor, Baling; Sungai Bata in Kampung Bata, Kubang Pasu; Sungai Naka in Naka, Padang Terap; and Sungai Kedah at the Department of Highways, Kota Setar," he said in a statement today.
The floods were caused by heavy rain that began at 2.00 pm yesterday. To date, only one relief centre remains open.
