JAKARTA, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- Police have arrested 2,318 suspects and seized 1.14 tonnes of narcotics valued at about 1.13 trillion rupiah (US$67.85 million) in the Greater Jakarta area over the past three months.
Jakarta Metro Jaya Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri said the achievement stemmed from investigations into 1,719 cases during the period.
“This operation has protected the people of Jakarta and the surrounding areas from the dangers of narcotics. By preventing misuse, we have saved an estimated 4.56 million lives,” he said in a statement.
The confiscated drugs included 604 kilogrammes (kg) of methamphetamine, 221 kg of cannabis, 67.7 kg of liquid methamphetamine, 23,000 ecstasy tablets, 569,000 restricted pharmaceutical pills, 9.1 kg of synthetic tobacco, and nearly 20 kg of synthetic seeds intended for cultivating drug-producing plants.
According to Narcotics Director Commissioner Ahmad David, the suspects detained included six producers, one trafficker, and 769 dealers.
“At least 1,542 addicts or victims were referred for rehabilitation in coordination with Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency,” he added.
